Johannes Brahms – Academic Festival Overture
Charles Ives – Symphony No. 2 (Bobby Horton, featured guest folk musician)

Award-winning Folk musician and historian Bobby Horton returns to the BSO stage by popular demand to tell the story behind The Great American Symphony – the Second Symphony of Charles Ives. Ives wove familiar folk tunes, church hymns and excerpts from classics by Brahms, Beethoven and Wagner into his highly original symphony.

The concert opens with Brahms’s Academic Festival Overture – a work written for the occasion of Brahms receiving an honorary doctorate. His wry sense of humor regarding academia is obvious, as he included the melodies from student drinking songs as the basis for this “serious” composition.

This concert will be presented without intermission – images of both composers and sights relevant to their influences will be projected onto a screen above the orchestra, and musical excerpts will be performed before each piece to demonstrate what makes them so unique.

Enhance your concert experience! You are invited to attend Concert Conversations with Christopher Confessore. This informative discussion begins approximately 40 minutes before the performance. Main floor is open seating during this interactive chat.
