The King Center's efforts to meet special needs of patrons with disabilities

Sunday, March 6, 2011

The Maxwell C. King Center for the Performing Arts, located on the Melbourne campus of Eastern Florida State College (formerly Brevard Community College), was established to enrich the cultural and educational opportunities of Florida’s Space Coast. As a Direct Support Organization of Eastern Florida State College and a 501(C)(3) NOT-FOR-PROFIT Organization our goal has always been to enhance the lives of our community. We are committed to providing a facility that encourages easy accessibility for our patrons.

The King Center has been designed to make patron accessibility as easy as possible. A drop-off area, with curbside assistance, is available under the covered drive-through in front of the building off the Post Road entrance. Accessible Parking is limited and available on a first come, first served basis. There is ramp access from the parking lot to the building. Please plan to arrive early.

Accessibility Services

Wheelchair Accessibility*
Limited wheelchair seating is available on the main floor with seating for one companion adjacent or nearby.
Blind or Low Vision Accessibility*
Limited seating is available upon request. Every effort will be made to accommodate patron requests. Service animals are welcome.
Assistive Listening Devices
Request assistive devices at the Lobby Information Desk when attending the performance. There is no charge; however, a driver’s license or credit card is required as a deposit.
Sign Language Interpretation
A written request must be received by the Executive Director of the King Center three weeks prior to the performance and is subject to artist approval.
Large Print Programs
When a show presented by the King Center requires a program, large print programs are made available (at no charge) from the Lobby Information Desk.

*Requests must be made at time of ticket purchase to ensure availability.

Ticketing for Patrons with Disabilities
The Ticket Office designates a fixed number of seats for patrons with disabilities. These seats are sold on a first come, first served basis. Two weeks prior to an event, any remaining unsold seats may be released for general sale. Notification of a need for these reserved seats is critical and MUST be made at the time of ticket purchase.

Available Facilities
• First floor restroom facilities are equipped for patrons with disabilities. Should you require assistance, please notify a King Center volunteer usher.
• Emergency exits are clearly marked and the King Center volunteers are available to provide immediate assistance.
• Elevator access to the Grand Tier (opening directly across from row PP) and the King Center’s Crown Club is located on the north side of the building to the left of the main entrance.

Our Commitment
The King Center for the Performing Arts is committed to providing an accessible building and a pleasurable performance experience for every member of our audience and staff. Wheelchair locations, curbside assistance, parking near the entrance (on a first come, first served basis), assisted listening devices and accessible restroom facilities are available for all performances.

We encourage patrons needing specific services to notify the ticket office when placing your ticket order. This allows us to confirm service availability for specific performances and also allows us to avoid costs for unused services in the event that such services are not needed. Information regarding your particular needs is important to us. For more information please call the Ticket Office at (321) 242-2219.

We sincerely hope that you find our theatre comfortable and easily accessible. The King Center has helpful and friendly ushers, Ticket Office and event staff who can assist or offer guidance at any time during your visit. We welcome you to our performing arts center and invite your feedback on ways that we may better serve you.

The Maxwell C. King Center for the Performing Arts upholds the Americans with Disabilities Act by making our facility and programs accessible to all people. It is our desire to develop and nurture a communicative working relationship with our patrons and be responsive to our community’s ever changing needs. If you have any comments, suggestions or recommendations concerning our facility accessibility, please feel free to contact the King Center Administrative Office at (321) 433-5719.
