America’s favorite dad, Bill Cosby, was recently honored with the prestigious Johnny Carson Award for Comedic Excellence at the 2014 "American Comedy Awards" which airs on Thursday, May 8 at 9 pm on NBC.

The 76-year-old comedian was honored for his outstanding work over the past 50 years during a ceremony on April 26 in New York City. The prize, named after iconic talk show host Johnny Carson, is given to "an individual who, over the course of their lifetime, has made an extraordinary contribution to comedy".

“Bill Cosby is an iconic figure at the forefront of the Amerian comedy landscape,” said NBC president of alternative and late-night programming, Paul Telegdy, in a release. “His work in television, film, stand-up comedy and literature has shaped the national sense of humor has had an enduring impact on comedians and fans of all ages. We are delighted to honor him with the Johnny Carson Award during NBC’s inaugural broadcast of the American Comedy Awards.”
